Ankle sprains

Ankle sprains are a common occurrence in both sports and day to day life. They strike at the most inconvenient times and places; mid-season basketball, soccer playoffs, volleyball tournaments, weekend hikes with family, or on the job site or farm.

Ankle sprains can be both debilitating and frustrating, causing lost play time and decreased job performance. It can be especially frustrating when the injury lingers or nags for several weeks to even sometimes several months. This is usually due to improper treatment.

Hands-on treatment for ankle sprains is often necessary to facilitate full recovery. In addition to the actual ligament sprain, the bones in the ankle and foot can become stiff, irritated, and even subtly out of alignment. Muscles that support the ankle can become weak. The nerves surrounding the injury site can become hyper-irritated due to lingering injury and inflammation. Balance can then be off due to the above, predisposing the athlete or individual to re-injury. Skilled, hands-on treatment can address all of the above.

At Spine & Performance, a careful approach to reduce pain and swelling, and improve ankle muscle firing and balance is utilized and is sure to get the athlete back in action much sooner. If not treated properly, these injuries can linger for weeks or months, so a skilled, individualized evaluation is performed to determine appropriate treatment for each patient. The best part is that most individuals don't require a referral for treatment.
