Headaches are common. Many people have the type of headache that can be helped through specialized treatment aimed at loosening stiff joints and muscles in the upper neck and upper back.
Headaches that can be helped through physical therapy are referred to by medical practitioners as cervicogenic headaches. This simply means, headaches arising from the upper cervical spine (neck). These neck headaches are generally felt on one side, though they can be felt on both sides, in the forehead, ears or eyes. They are often chronic (those with sudden onset, severe headache should seek medical evaluation prior to coming to physical therapy), and often associated with prolonged positioning at work or from sleep postures. These headaches often involve neck pain, shoulder or shoulder blade-area pain, and even jaw pain (TMJ dysfunction).
Recommended treatments are joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, and strengthening of neck and upper back muscles, and these are all routinely performed at Somerset Spine & Performance Physiotherapy in the treatment of headaches.
A proper diagnosis will require a thorough physical exam from a provider accustomed to dealing with headaches.
