What is dry needling?
Dry needling is a form of therapy in which fine needles are inserted into myofascial trigger points (painful knots in muscles), tendons, ligaments or around nerves in order to stimulate a healing response in a variety of painful musculoskeletal conditions such as: neck pain, low back pain, headaches, sciatica, shoulder impingement, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee pain, shin splints, or plantar fasciitis. It works by loosening tight muscles and connective tissue, increasing blood flow to the injured area, helping decrease nerve sensitivity (as in the case with chronic pain or fibromyalgia), and decreasing local inflammation. Dry needling is not acupuncture or Oriental medicine; that is, it does not have the purpose of alternating the (“Qi”) along traditional Chinese meridians for the treatment of diseases. In fact, dry needling is a modern, science-based intervention for the treatment of pain and dysfunction in musculoskeletal problems such as See here for current literature reference for the type of dry needling utilized at Spine & Performance.
Is it painful?
The needles used are quite thin and not hollow like a hypodermic needle one would receive an injection with. The patient usually experiences mild to no discomfort with the insertion of the needles. Depending on the treatment, the needles are then sometimes manipulated lightly or stimulated with electrical stimulation (similar to a TENS unit) to elicit a muscle contraction in the affected muscles, and this stimulation can sometimes be mildly uncomfortable.
How much does it cost?
An individual needling session is $45. Get it as part of a comprehensive manipulation, cupping and dry needling package for $60.
What is cupping?
Cupping is a form of soft tissue manipulation designed to ease muscle tension and tightness, and reduce hypersensitivity within the nerves that supply a particular area such as the lower back. It is used to treat many of the same issues dry needling is used to treat. See the picture above for the treatment of low back pain. It is easy to see the increased blood flow and tissue stretching that occurs. Also $45 for an individual session.
